Durante mi estancia en Segovia pinté, como he comentado en otras entradas, varias series de cuadros. Además de la Blanca hice varias tablas de formato cuadrado cuyo tema eran los propios becarios en La Granja de San Ildefonso o en los alrededores de Segovia. A pesar de que en ellas trabajé de manera similar que en la Serie Blanca pronto pasé a ampliar la paleta e incluir otras gamas de colores, como verdes, tierras y rojos, estos últimos en la ropa de algunas de las figuras que aparecen. En alguna imagen se pueden ver figuras repetidas, esto se debe a que suelo trabajar a partir de collages fotográficos en los que, en ocasiones, aparece una misma figura en diferentes lugares y actitudes. Esto me resultó interesante y al año siguiente lo trabajé en una serie de retratos que hice durante los cursos de doctorado.
En la exposición colectiva que hicimos finalmente en la Casa de los Picos colgué en mi espacio dos de estas obras (1m x1m) junto a dos de la Serie Blanca (de pequeño formato). Una buena anécdota está relacionada con estos dos cuadros.
La sala de exposiciones estaba repleta, muchos compañeros vendían sus cuadros a la gente que visitaba la exposición. Incluso había quien tuvo éxito y se paseaba con fajos de billetes de cien en el bolsillo. Eran tiempos más prósperos, claro. Yo no vendía nada. Además del gasto en materiales y otras cosas no sabía qué hacer con la treintena de cuadros en caso de no venderlos pues, como no tenía coche ni carné de conducir, dependía de un compañero para regresar a Valencia. De manera que andaba algo deprimido y de mal humor pensando en cómo volver a Valencia a tiempo para coger un barco a Mallorca con aquel montón de lienzos, tablas, bastidores, caballete, cajas, pinceles, equipaje y demás trastos. En ese momento una mujer me buscó por la sala de exposiciones. Era más bien humilde, vamos, que no parecía el tipo de persona dispuesta a comprar un cuadro y menos uno grande. Si no recuedo mal iba acompañada de otra mujer. Al poco de entablar conversación me felicitó por mis cuadros que le habían sorprendido mucho gratamente y me dijo: “Llevo años trabajando en La Granja como limpiadora y quisiera felicitarle pues sus cuadros SON La Granja de San Ildefonso”. No es que, según sus palabras, se pareciesen más o menos o que estuviesen mejor o peor pintados, sino que ERAN la Granja. Leyendo el Modern Painters de Ruskin reflexioné sobre ello y concluí que lo que aquella mujer vió en aquellos paisajes era una idea verdadera: la imagen que ella misma se había formado de esos lugares pintada por otra persona. De ahí que le impresionaran tanto.
En aquel momento el halago me alegró mucho e hizo que se me pasase la preocupación por el tema de los cuadros que tenía sin colocar. Me dediqué a pasármelo bien. Era la última tarde de exposición, había que celebrarlo. Al poco apareció un señor con su hija pequeña. A ella le gustaban los personajes que aparecían en los paisajes y decía entusiasmada que quería esos cuadros. El padre me mandó llamar, se me acercó y me preguntó: “¿Cuánto por toda la pared?”.
Tal vez aquella tarde amorticé el mes becado, sin embargo, mi mayor ganancia fue la siguiente lección: nada tiene más valor que la satisfacción de saber que algo que uno mismo ha hecho significa algo para otra persona.
